I\u2019ve definitely seen\u00a0a few Facebook memes declaring it, and other\u2019s have often repeated it from wherever they saw or heard it from too.<\/p>\n<p><em style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; background: transparent;\">But is this popular myth actually true?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>BIG NEWS \u2013 No, it\u2019s not!<\/p>\n<p>The original idea of this myth came about from the initial misunderstanding about\u00a0glial cells (90% of the brain)\u00a0not being a functional part of the brain, only the neurons (10% of the brain) were.<\/p>\n<p>What we now know is that glial cells<em> do<\/em> have a function:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>They provide physical and chemical support and protection for the neurons.<\/li>\n<li>They contribute to homeostasis by regulating the chemical environment for optimal conditions.<\/li>\n<li>They are also found in both the central nervous system (CNS) and the peripheral nervous system (PNS) and are sometimes referred to as the &#8216;glue&#8217; of the nervous system.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>As a result, while we don\u2019t use 100% of our brains all the time, it <i>is <\/i>available to us!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In modern life particularly, we\u00a0are conditioned to use certain parts of the brain more frequently than others via repetition of the same thoughts, feelings and behavioural habits \u2013 known as programs. As these neurons connect, wire and fire together in repetition, we create what is called brain dominance.<\/p>\n<p>Brain dominance can either be within certain habit loops (groupings of neurons) or in the left or right\u00a0hemispheres of the brain.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This concept is\u00a0similar to the stress and relaxation responses:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When we are constantly worrying and activating stress chemicals within our body, our sympathetic nervous system becomes dominant, placing great strain on the brain and body over time, known as chronic stress.<\/li>\n<li>The parasympathetic nervous system in control of the relaxation response is not being consciously activated because the stress response is being over-activated to deal with modern stress, overwhelm and demand.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When we operate from brain dominance \u2013 either through conditioned habits or repetitive thoughts and behaviours \u2013 we aren\u2019t operating with a \u2018whole\u2019 brain.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Therefore, it\u2019s important to regularly practice realigning the brain for coherence.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Simple techniques like: crossing your legs and arms together, or crossing them over the midline of your body can activate both brain hemispheres simultaneously.
